You Build Me Up

Playful critter cards always bring a little extra personality to the craft table, and the adorable characters in the Simon Says StampIn My Heart release made these designs especially fun to build. The tiny animals and lego blocks naturally suggest interaction and movement, so I leaned into that idea by arranging the scenes so the critters feel like they are actively creating something together.

Two of the cards also gave me a chance to incorporate a favorite technique of mine. By stamping and masking the images before ink blending the backgrounds, I was able to softly build color around the Copic-colored characters without covering them. That approach keeps the critters crisp and clean while still allowing the background color to add atmosphere to the scene.

You Build Me Up

For this first card, I wanted the critters to feel like they were working together to build something, so I arranged them along a diagonal path across the card. That angled composition immediately creates movement and leads the eye from one character to the next.

Before blending the background color, I masked the stamped images so the soft ink blending could glow behind the characters without dulling the Copic coloring. The gradient adds depth and helps connect the individual elements into a cohesive scene while still keeping the overall design clean and open.

Let’s Connect

For the second card, I shifted the design into a framed layout that feels a little more contained and playful. The scalloped tunnel window creates a stage for the critters and blocks to interact, allowing the scene to sit comfortably within the center of the card.

The warm orange background helps reinforce the cheerful tone of the design and draws attention to the characters inside the frame. Arranging the blocks and critters so they appear to be passing pieces to one another helps the scene feel interactive and story-driven.

Love You to Pieces

For the final card, I wanted the Lego heart to become the main design element that immediately communicates the theme of the card. The critter adding the final piece gives the composition a playful finishing moment.

Just like the first card, I masked the stamped images before ink blending the background. That soft halo of color behind the heart helps the focal element stand out while keeping the rest of the card clean and simple.

These cards were a great reminder that small characters and simple shapes can tell a complete story when the placement is intentional. A little masking, thoughtful composition, and bright color can quickly turn a few stamped images into a playful scene.
